The Furniture Bank Houston Celebrates 30 years of “Making Empty Houses Homes”
The Woodlands, TX (October 14, 2022) The Furniture Bank Houston (HFB) has served the Greater Houston community for more than 30 years by providing essential furniture for families and individuals in need. In 2021, The Furniture Bank served 1,485 families and 1,035 new mattresses were distributed through the “No Kids on the Floor” initiative.
The Furniture Bank Houston’s mission of “Making Empty Houses Homes” began in 1992 when The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD connected with The Furniture Bank Houston to serve patients who were transitioning out of mental health facilities. Three years later, in 1995, the Furniture Bank service was extended to other Harris County non-profit agency clients. By the end of 2003, The Furniture Bank Houston was established as an independent organization serving the greater Houston area. It has continued to grow since then, adding a location in The Woodlands with more locations planned to open in the next few years.
With the support of industry partners and the Houston community, The Furniture Bank Houston works with over 80 social service partner agencies to provide essential furniture to families in need.. The nonprofit serves families affected by poverty, homelessness, domestic violence, mental and physical health concerns, and disasters.
Oli Mohammed, founder of The Furniture Bank for MHMRA and now the Executive Director of this independent 501©3 non-profit organization, explains the mission this way: “Furniture is a critical steppingstone to improve living conditions and elevate an individual’s personal pride and dignity.”
During its 30-year-history, The Furniture Bank Houston has served over 40,000 families, representing more than 120,000 individuals. They have recycled over 150,000 mattresses. They have ensured that more than 50,000 children have slept in beds rather than on a cold, hard floor, and have been able to be seated at a table to share their meals instead of using discarded cardboard boxes. And they have continued to be a second chance organization, providing meaningful and gainful employment to at-risk job applicants.
The Furniture Bank works with over 45 social service partner agencies to provide essential furniture to families in need. The organization serves families affected by poverty, homelessness, domestic violence, mental and physical health concerns, and disasters. Partnering businesses assist with furniture in the outlet stores including Gallery Furniture, Star Furniture, American Warehouse Furniture, Landmark Furniture, Mattress Firm, Serta Simmons Bedding, Hoffer Furniture, Ashley Furniture, Mattress for Less, and more.
The Furniture Bank Houston invites the community, their furniture partners, and partnering nonprofit agencies to the 30-year Anniversary Grand Opening Celebration of the Furniture Bank Montgomery County on Friday, November 4, at 10:00am, located at 295 Sawdust Road in The Woodlands. Program and refreshments will be followed by facility tours. Please kindly RSVP to https://bit.ly/tfb30.
Speaking on behalf of The Furniture Bank Houston will be representatives from Hoffer Furniture, Landmark Furniture, Rooms to Go, Serta Simmons Bedding, Mattresses for Less, Tri County Behavioral Health, and the Harris County Center for Mental Health and IDD. Montgomery County Judge Mark Keough will provide the invocation. A family who had an interior remodel by the D.I.V.A.S. (Designing Interiors Volunteers At Your Service) will speak about their life-changing outlook on life from support by The Furniture Bank.
As a program of the Furniture Bank, the DIVAS serve families and individuals who are affected by poverty, physical and mental health concerns, domestic violence, and natural disasters. Many of these families have lost all of their personal belongings and have nothing but a roof over their heads. The families are working with social service agencies to improve their life circumstances.
